About Me
What started as idle doodles on my iPad during high school lectures slowly evolved into something much greater. What once were simple sketches soon transformed into large abstract portraits on canvas—bold strokes of color, lines that broke convention, and faces that told stories beyond a single perspective.
I am Nicky Desai, a 22-year-old artist based in Hopkinton, MA. I graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, with degrees in Mathematics and Economics. But my love for art began long before my academic pursuits. It intertwined with another lifelong passion: music.
For my birthday ten years ago, my dad gifted me an iPod, preloaded with all of his music. At the time, I had no idea that tiny device would open up an entire world for me. Each day, I would dive into a new artist, a new album—alternative rock, classic rock, jazz, soul, folk, hip-hop. I became obsessed with the way music made me feel. Every tone, every melody, every shift in instrumentation carried an emotion so distinct that no other song could replicate it. Over the years, my love for music only deepened, becoming an essential part of how I experienced the world.
At the same time, my artistic style was also evolving. I became captivated by the cubist works of Picasso—his ability to break apart a face and reassemble it in fragments, showing multiple perspectives at once. His portraits didn’t just depict a person; they evoked an entire range of emotions, psychological depth, and movement. I was fascinated by the idea that a face, when distorted, could speak louder than a realistic rendering ever could.
And that’s when it hit me—art and music were the same to me. Both had the power to evoke something intangible, something that couldn’t be put into words. But despite their similarities, I felt there was a disconnect between the two worlds. What if I could bridge that gap?
That’s how Art Beats was born. Art Beats is my creative venture—an art company dedicated to transforming sound into visual form. Each piece I create is inspired by a song, an attempt to capture its essence, its emotion, its energy in a visual language. My math background finds its way into my work through symmetry, geometry, and intricate linework, while my Indian heritage adds cultural depth, merging patterns and traditions into the fabric of my art. Through Art Beats, I aim to harmonize sound with sight, to create a space where music is not just heard but seen.
